Now onto the good stuff: In this podcast, Shaun and I wanted to dive into a conversation that has become a relatively regular topic in our lives: Body image. It doesn't take a detective to see that Shaun and I have very, very different body types. Honestly, we don't think much about it ourselves, but have often been subject to scrutiny, or, at very least, curiosity because of it. After all, this is Shaun:
And this is me:
First, let me make it clear: These literal comparisons of his body type vs. mine have ZERO assignment of value. I think he is HOT. And I think I am beautiful. I don't think the fact that I am not ripped with a 6 pack makes me less valuable or attractive, just as I loved Shaun before his crossfit body- when he was still very slim, but not nearly as muscle-y. This conversation was one that, if we're being honest (and we are), Shaun and I often gloss over. It's not shocking to either of us that we live in very different bodies (and likely live very different existences because of it), but I think part of us pretends it's "not an issue" because the topic of weight and fitness is controversial, at its most innocent, and hurtful at its most malicious. Neither one of us want to be the target of or the cause of the others' hurt, so for most of the years we've known and loved each other, we've skipped over most of the conversation. This podcast allowed us to ask the hard questions- the ones we've avoided being honest about for years, for fear that we might be trapped into an answer, or worse- be hurt by one. While the territory was still new and the terrain still rocky, I think we traversed it in a way that was indicative of how we live our lives: respectfully, kindly, candidly, and with love. Shaun put his cards on the table, and I did mine. We addressed insecurities that have been hard to acknowledge. We examined ways in which our lives have been affected by the other not sharing the same kind of physical "space" the other takes up, and ultimately, we arrived at a place I'd assumed we would: That our live far outWEIGHS (pun intended) our bodies.
